A First Meeting

His first sight is a flash of red in his eye line.
He darts for the safety of oak –
so often he plays the hunted,
despite the blade of his jaw.

His sharp eyes settle on the slender girl.
She carries her basket tenderly,
protecting the sweetness inside.
Her mother has taught her to be good.

The plumped dough of the bread and rise
of the cake is not his interest. He imagines her cape
lying fleshless on the grass,
how her skin would feel beneath his claws.

He jumps from his cover, unsure how to strike
conversation. He points to wild flowers,
talks of their beauty under morning sun, asks
why don’t you pick them? She follows his gaze.

Claire Walker’s poetry has appeared in magazines, anthologies and websites including The Interpreter’s House, Ink Sweat and Tears, And Other Poems, Clear Poetry and Crystal Voices. Her first pamphlet, The Girl Who Grew Into a Crocodile, is published by V. Press. Her website is clairewalkerpoetry.com.

How a Mermaid Knows Her Own Mind
(After the Polish folk tale The Mermaid of Warsaw)

You thought you could take me;
net my scales, row my skin to shore;
thought you could make me a gift to a prince,
dull me to a fish on a platter.

Mermaids bloom in full moons.
Look at my eyes: I have the sea’s colour
in me- all its reckless tides
and licking waves.

Don’t be fooled by my tail -
my body curves as a woman.
Its silver song plays out my wishes,
casts the pitch of the spell.

I know you catch the notes in your ears,
no lime can mask your scent.
See how the waves signal you? Come,
wouldn’t you like to jump?

Claire Walker‘s poetry has appeared in various print and online magazines including The Interpreter’s House, Ink Sweat and Tears, And Other Poems, Snakeskin and Kumquat Poetry. In June 2014 she was runner up in the 2014/2015 Worcestershire Poet Laureate Competition.

Needlework

Emperor! Let me love you with the finest cloth,
wrap the silken thread around your loins.
Take my counsel - your outfit has never given
the right impression until now.

This garment will spare your coins
for gratitude is payment enough.

Feel how the thread snakes its way down your back
so finger-light you’d question your own perception.
Take a look, stroke the material,
it’s how a seamstress judges the design.

These robes are worthy of procession. An image
such as this deserves wider eyes.

Oh! We will snap you
in all your finery, press your clothing
into print. Imagine women having the honour
of breaking their fast with you.

I shouldn’t need to coerce you, sir, can’t you see
the way your body melts and moulds this pattern?

Do not care to sit at the loom, I will embroider it
myself for you- a gift I have learned from my kind.
Once it is done I will sew you up-
a gift I have learned from yours.

Charming

Imagine her surprise if one day she looks
at her feet and finds only one heel.
Observed when water seeps
through from murky pavements.

The volume of her heart will rise:
He will save her. Any moment now.
Arrive to free her from dirty laundry.
She’s running
an errand this morning:
‘Oi, get some cigarettes’.

When she notices how long she’s been standing
pavement – bound in the rain at the One Stop,
she’ll realise the sting:
the missing shoe is not made of glass
and her mirror hangs mute on fairness.
