Welcome to our final seasonal special at Three Drops from a Cauldron – the simultaneously icy-frosty, warm-and-cosy, comforting-yet-unsettling Midwinter 2018. It’s been a beautiful thing to put together – there are myths, lore, legends and traditions most of us will find familiar (magpies, solstice, Christmas, fairytales like Snow White, and so on), but also quite a few things I personally wasn’t as familiar with, such as celebrating the Night of the Three Kings in Spain, and the Canadian story of the hoof lady.

This is the last time selections will be made with the editorial team, so my thanks a hundred times to Becca Goodin, Loma Sylvana Jones, Amy Kinsman, Holly Magill, Grant Tarbard, Penny Sharman, and Claire Walker, for all the reading they’ve put in for seasonal specials, and the time they’ve taken to give considered opinions on those submissions. The team will be staying around in case anything pressing needs to be done on a practical level – which is very kind of them – but otherwise I’m back to being a one-woman selection making process.
